Yards after the catch (YAC) over expectation measures how much more a player gains after the reception than a typical player would from the same catch — same depth, same situation. It isolates real playmaking from scheme: a screen-heavy player will pile up raw YAC, but YAC over expectation credits the players who genuinely create.
Alongside it, forced missed tackles and broken tackles quantify the ability to turn a routine gain into a chunk play. These with-the-ball traits are especially valuable for backs and receivers in offenses that manufacture touches, because they add points on top of volume.
Creation skills travel with the player. A back who forces missed tackles at a high rate keeps doing it when his volume grows, which makes him a strong breakout bet if opportunity opens up. Reading these numbers helps you find the players whose production would scale with a bigger role — the best kind of buy-low or late-round target.
